Designing from the past

It’s been said that there is “nothing new under the sun.” It’s a somewhat depressing statement. It’s essentially saying that anything and everything happening or being created now has happened or have been created before. It basically means “You’re not special. It’s all been done before.” Assuming the bleak statement is true, what’s a creative person to do?

If it’s too late for us to create anything new, then why not take something cool from the past and do it again? This is exactly what Jonathan Ive did. Ive studied one of the great masters of industrial design Dieter Rams of Braun. Here is how the designs of the past decades inspired some of the notable Apple products.

It appears that Jonathan Ive is pretty open about his admiration of Dieter Rams. I’m not sure which came first, the inspiration or the open admiration. But the Apple bashers have been somewhat chill about the issue. You know what? It shouldn’t matter anyway. That’s what great designers do. Learn from the past and from each other. Some are more secretive about it than others. It’s nothing new.
